Five Falafels in 29 Minutes

That’s the challenge, reported by the Gothamist today, at On the Grill, a falafel/Middle Eastern joint on Queens Boulevard. If you down the five full-sized falafels (as opposed to half sandwiches), they’re on the house plus you get a $50 gift certificate at the restaurant. If you don’t, then you have to pay for whatever you did manage to eat.

The Gothamist writes:

If the folks at On the Grill have their way, this storefront Israeli spot in Forest Hills may become to Queens what Nathan’s Famous is to Coney Island. Owner Tzur Kalaf has no intention of giving up his Glatt Kosher certification and serving hot dogs, though. Instead he’s launched what he calls “The Great Falafel Eating Contest”, which started Monday and lasts until Feb. 28.

Notice the boldfaced words. Since when are hot dogs incompatible with being glatt kosher (and since when is glatt kosher capitalized)? Forget Nathans, and forget even Hebrew National. But there are hot dogs that are as kosher as you can get. So maybe a better sentence would have been:

Owner Tzur Kalaf has no intention of giving up his questionably safe frying oil and serving hot dogs, though.

Also per the Gothamist: when asked whether he could envision ever becoming the Nathan’s of Forest Hills, [Kalaf] responded, “We want to be the Nathan’s of Queens, my friend.”

Love that outsized ambition! Even if borough-wide recognition doesn’t come out of this promo, one good thing that has already come out of it for me is that I’ve learned that On the Grill delivers.
