Pre-K and K Enrollment Info.

The Daily News has this public service announcement:

Parents of children entering high-demand prekindergarten programs may find the mad dash for enrollment a little saner for the coming school year.

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein has announced a streamlined admissions process that will allow parents to enroll children as early as March. The Education Department is hosting information sessions to explain the new process.

“We need to replace the numerous rules and time lines with a single, simple, fair process,” said Klein in a statement.

The Queens information session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Jamaica High School, 167-01 Gothic Drive, Jamaica.

That’s this Monday, tomorrow night. But fear not if you can’t make it to the session: there is an excellent blow-by-blow blog post of the new procedure by Neil DeMause in the Village Voice online. If you’ve got a pre-schooler heading toward pre-school and/or kindergarten, DeMause’s take will be very helpful reading. All the more so in Forest Hills, where the reputation of the schools (esp. 196 and 101) is a top draw of the neighborhood.

If you are enrolling your child and already have a sibling attending 101, a general letter is sent home with the students advising of the process and what paperwork needs to be completed. As of last week, the adminsitrators said there should be no competition for spots for kindergarden, unlike pre-k. You are assured a spot for kindergarden, with or without siblings already enrolled in the school.

Looking forward to finding out how streamlined the process will be come March..

    Thanks for this, “Tonic.”

I’ve heard some queasy things about 196, e.g., there might not be as many spots as there have been in the past. So I wanted to get this out there so that people could start reading up on what is involved. If anyone has information about any of the schools (196, 101, 144), please share.
