What a scene—Forest Hills is blanketed in snow! The trees are covered, especially the evergreens, which are rocking a romantic, drapey effect. I took my morning constitutional, not too bothered by the 1/2″-diameter flakes pelting my face, and was thrilled to see kids and dogs piling on snow dunes, cars so thickly buried that they look like igloos, and best of all no lines! Not at the Natural, not at Starbucks, and not even at the post office, that last one being something of a latter-day miracle.

The snowploughs and sand trucks are starting to come out, too (Mike, if you’re reading this, I want to report very little evidence of them at 7 a.m. this morning), and a reconnoiter of the roads yields slow going.

So if you were lucky enough to pull a snow day for yourself, get it while it’s cold and powdery—in a few short hours it’s going to be infused with car exhaust and—
