iPhone Mania

Our ATT store on Continental is one of the few sure-bets to receive a shipment of new iPhones this morning. The store opens at 10 a.m., but don’t bother rushing over there. If it’s just occurring to you now that you might want to buy one today, you’re seriously behind the curve. Actually, it’s more like a zig-zag that runs some-100 people deep, all waiting to get into that store and get theirs.

I asked a young guy, early twenties, what the line was about, since it’s not something you usually see around these here parts, and iPhone mania hadn’t occurred to me because my interest in it has been limited to reading David Pogue’s review of it in the NY Times a few days ago. He told me that he had gotten there at 3 a.m. to stake his claim, but then sold it for $50 bucks, putting him one-fourth the way toward buying his new iPhone, retailing for $200 including contract. He just won’t be getting it today, thus losing some bragging rights.

That line, something between waiting to buy Springsteen tickets and a flash mob, left me with two thoughts. First, this is not our grandfathers’ Forest Hills. Second, the line at Starbucks was much less annoying than usual, by comparison
