Bikes Racks, Any Day Now?

Today I received this update from Steve Melnick/Queens Blvd Restoration Group
*
I have been exploring a number of neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens–we are not faring too well compared to some of them. I just noticed 4 sites along the sidewalks of Continental Av that have been designated for bike racks. DOT confirms that they should be installed shortly. I hope the city does not run out of money before then!
The locations are marked with 2 orange spots. Check out the sidewalks outside of Rite Aid, Starbucks, Duane Reade, and Radio Shack. Racks are only installed on sidewalks wider than 12 feet. I counted 17 bikes chained to trees, poles and tree guards earlier this week. We have been complaining to DOT for several years. Our efforts in submitting the NYC City Racks request forms paid off. Thanks to all who participated!

And thanks for Steve Melnick for staying on top of this. Bike racks are badly needed in Forest Hills. More people are seeing their bikes as a viable way to get around, between gas prices and the congestion that takes place here every afternoon. I’m also a supporter of adding a bike lane on Queens Boulevard, though I have some concerns about it. Having biked to and from work in Manhattan for several years, I know first-hand just how dangerous it is to bike in Queens, and I can’t imagine that simply adding a bike lane will be a cure-all, but it’s a start. We have a long way to go until Queens is a biker-friendly borough; perhaps we’re starting to see some progress.

    Welcome back Karbeth!
The first of hopefully several bike racks has been installed at the corner of QB and 70th Rd where MacDonald Park begins.
It’s a good spot– only one block from the subway.
Trying to find out when others will be installed.
    Progress!

Thanks to all who helped with this project!
